Linda Tharp’s abstract paintings deal with the specific qualities of various paints and effect of elemental forces upon them. Puddling paints of different viscosities together causes intermingling of color through capillary action rather than brushwork. Working over a thick layer of damp absorbent ground, droplets of paint expand into aureoles; applying a medium that breaks the surface tension of fluid sends poured paint in unpredictable directions. The paintings are formed in a process of collaboration between the artist and the forces that affect the movement of fluids on a surface.
